Lualdi at W. Atelier Singapore — the door as architecture.

A door evokes a moment in time, an action, the beginning of a story.

Since 1860, Lualdi has made doors in Milan the way others make furniture — as design. The LCD door with Luigi Caccia Dominioni brought industrial design to doors for the first time; the Rasomuro made the door disappear into the wall; Piero Lissoni's L7 gave it glass and aluminium. Doors, sliding and pivot systems, partitions and boiserie, custom-made in Italy and presented in Singapore by W. Atelier.

The factory of Italian design.

Lualdi's story began in 1860, when Carlo Lualdi founded a carpentry workshop in Magenta, outside Milan, specialising in high-quality bespoke work. The turning point came in the second half of the twentieth century with architect Luigi Caccia Dominioni — collaborator, mentor and family friend — whose LCD door, finished in a lacquer-coated polyester film, brought industrial design into the production of doors for the first time in the world. From there Lualdi revolutionised the door itself, creating systems that gave a whole new meaning to the wall: the flush-to-wall Rasomuro, sliding and pocket systems, pivot doors, boiserie and partitions, each a piece of interior architecture rather than an accessory to it.

A commission from the European Bank for Reconstruction and Development took Lualdi to London in the 1980s; a meeting with Carl Magnusson, design director at Knoll, took it to New York and the doors of the City Bank Tower. Today Lualdi works from Marcallo con Casone, Milan, with showrooms in Milan, London, Los Angeles, Miami and New York, and collaborations with Piero Lissoni, Philippe Starck, Robert A.M. Stern, Dante Bonuccelli, Kokaistudios, Marco Piva and Steve Leung. Its systems furnish the Libeskind residences at CityLife, the new Bocconi campus and residences from Miami to Cape Town; the L16 collection won the Compasso d'Oro in 2014. Now in its fifth generation of family ownership, Lualdi pairs that heritage with environmental commitments through programmes such as HORIZON 2020. As Lualdi's Singapore partner, W. Atelier presents the collection at our Henderson Road showroom.

Four pillars of Lualdi.

i.

The Door as Design

From the LCD door of the 1960s to the Compasso d'Oro-winning L16 of 2014, Lualdi has treated the door as a design object — signed by architects, engineered as a system, and conceived to redefine the wall rather than simply sit in it.

ii.

Invisible Engineering

Concealed hinges, magnetic locks, anti-noise gaskets, invisible aluminium frames installed without a sub-frame. Rasomuro and its family let the door vanish into the wall — technology in service of a clean line.

iii.

Made to Measure in Italy

Every door, partition and boiserie is custom-made in Milan to the opening it will fill, in lacquers, oak and Canaletto walnut, bronze and titanium aluminium, clear, satin, fluted and mesh glass.

iv.

Presented by W. Atelier

As Lualdi's Singapore partner, W. Atelier surveys the site, guides finishes and configuration with architects and homeowners, and manages delivery and installation from start to finish.

Architects who redrew the wall.

The Lualdi tradition is inseparable from its collaborations with some of the most authoritative Italian and international figures in design and architecture.

Three ways to open a room with Lualdi.

Flush, sliding, pivoting or panelled — the wall becomes the design.

Rasomuro & Doors

Rasomuro 55s · Rasoline · Rasovetro · L7

The door that disappears. Rasomuro 55s sits flush with the wall on concealed hinges and an invisible aluminium frame, in lacquer or wood, with Rasoline's shadow-line frame, Rasovetro in glass and an EI30 fire-rated version. Beside it, the hinged designer doors — Piero Lissoni's L7 in glass and aluminium, LCD62, San Siro and Koan.

Sliding, Pocket & Pivot

L7 Scorrevole · Pocket Door · L7 Pivot · Shoin

Doors that open a space rather than close it. L7 Scorrevole and Sliding 50 glide on the wall; pocket versions of L7, L41, LCD62 and Avenue vanish into it; L7 Pivot and Shoin Pivot turn on a single axis to become a moving wall. Glass surfaces punctuated by lustrous frames, in every finish of the range.

Wall&Door 55 · Boiserie · Boiserie Avenue

When the whole wall is the design. Wall&Door 55 integrates flush doors into a continuous panelled surface; Boiserie and Boiserie Avenue clad rooms in wood, lacquer and three-dimensional surfaces sculpted by lines of light and shadow. Finishes run from lacquer and wood to leather, with a full range of handles — Push & Pull, Martina, Lualdi, Outline, Edge, Ishi, Skye, Shoin, Pomm and CNQ/CNT flush handles — in passage, key, privacy and security-cylinder versions.

See how a wall opens.

A Lualdi door is something you understand in the hand — the weight of a Rasomuro swinging on concealed hinges, the glide of an L7, the way a pivot turns a wall into a passage. Common questions.

What is Lualdi?
Lualdi is an Italian manufacturer of designer doors, partitions and boiserie, founded in 1860 when Carlo Lualdi opened a bespoke carpentry workshop in Magenta, near Milan. Its partnership with architect Luigi Caccia Dominioni produced the LCD door, which brought industrial design into door production for the first time. Its L16 collection won the Compasso d'Oro in 2014. Today Lualdi is in its fifth generation of family ownership, headquartered at Marcallo con Casone, Milan, with showrooms in Milan, London, Los Angeles, Miami and New York.
Is W. Atelier an authorised Lualdi dealer in Singapore?
Yes. W. Atelier is Lualdi's authorised partner in Singapore, presenting the collection of doors, partitions and boiserie at its Henderson Road showroom. Every system is an authentic Lualdi product made in Italy, with full support from site survey and specification through to delivery and installation.
What is a Rasomuro door?
Rasomuro is Lualdi's flush-to-wall door system. A 55 mm hollow-core leaf sits in an invisible anodised aluminium frame with concealed hinges and a magnetic lock, installed without a sub-frame, so the door reads as a continuation of the wall. It is available in lacquered matt and gloss colours or wood veneers, as Rasoline (with a shadow-line frame), Rasovetro (glass) and as an EI30 fire-rated version.
Which designers has Lualdi worked with?
Lualdi's collaborations include Luigi Caccia Dominioni (the LCD door), Piero Lissoni (the L7 glass-and-aluminium collection), Philippe Starck, Robert A.M. Stern, Dante Bonuccelli, Kokaistudios, Marco Piva, Steve Leung, SBGA Blengini Ghirardelli and Andrea Boschetti.
Can Lualdi doors be made to measure?
Yes. Lualdi doors, partitions and boiserie are custom-made in Italy to the dimensions of each opening, with a full range of finishes — lacquered matt and gloss colours, oak and Canaletto walnut veneers, aluminium profiles in natural, bronze, titanium, lead-grey, brown, matt white and matt black, and glass in clear, satin, reflective, fluted and mesh versions. W. Atelier surveys the site and manages specification and installation.
