The installation featuring 60th Anniversary Editions of Fritz Hansen’s iconic Egg™, Swan™ and Drop™ chairs that was launched to a cocktail reception on 29 March 2018.
9 April 2017, Singapore – W. Atelier, together with The Republic of Fritz Hansen, celebrated the 60th Anniversary of the iconic Egg™, the Swan™ and the Drop™ chairs by the legendary Arne Jacobsen in style this week with an exhibition of Arne Jacobsen chairs from 29 March to 4 April at The Warehouse Hotel. The exhibition was launched at an intimate cocktail reception on 29 March, to 100 guests comprising industry partners and members of the media, who were treated to an exclusive viewing of the three chairs.
Guests were welcomed into the gorgeous hotel lobby of The Warehouse Hotel, an iconic hotel that preserves the exteriors of three warehouses along the Singapore River and along with that, a large dose of the area’s rich history that includes opium dens and brothels in the neighbourhood back in the day. Today, the hotel, with its sweeping high ceilings adorned with dangling light bulbs and vintage pulley wheels that used to be a part of the gostan mechanisms that proliferated along the River, is truly a wonderful amalgamation of history and modernity.
At the heart of the lobby stood the exuberant display of the hour: a chic statement of exclusive anniversary editions of the Egg™, the Swan™ and the Drop™ chairs, ensconced in a gorgeous matte gold bird cage – a clear reference to one of the most unique facets of Singapore’s history: the iconic bird singing corner at Tiong Bahru. Much like how the legacy of the iconic Arne Jacobsen chairs has been passed down through the years, W. Atelier hopes that the convivial beauty and warm fellowship of this facet of Singapore’s past will come back to life one day, as more young Singaporeans take a keener interest in preserving and reviving the gems of yesteryear.
Designed by Arne Jacobsen in 1958, the Egg™, the Swan™ and the Drop™ chairs were originally designed for the SAS Royal Hotel in Copenhagen, also designed by Arne Jacobsen. The 60th Anniversary editions of the three chairs pays homage to their emblematic silhouettes in new finishes; the Egg™, the Swan™ will be available in a buttery leather that is buttery-soft to the touch, while the Drop™ has been upholstered with a long-lasting and structured Sera wool fabric in brown-grey. All three Anniversary editions of the chairs are finished in luxurious 23-karat gold coated base. There will only be 1958 pieces each of the 60th Anniversary version of the Egg™ and the Swan™ chairs, while each Anniversary edition of the Drop™ chair will have a special anniversary label with only a limited number of pieces available till the end of this year.
The design installations that feature Arne Jacobsen chairs are organised in collaboration with the Design Hotels Group and will be held in three cities across Asia in selected Design Hotels throughout the month of March: The Warehouse Hotel in Singapore, Trunk Hotel in Tokyo, and The Sukhothai in Bangkok. The installation in Singapore was up from 29 March to 4 April. Following which, the special anniversary editions of the chairs will be available for viewing or purchase at the Fritz Hansen mono-store located at the House of W. Atelier Showroom in Bukit Timah.
