Magistretti’s autobiographic design returns from the Cassina Historical Archive

Vico Magistretti always said that "design is like keeping a diary”, “a kind of autobiography” and only  developed projects that he could imagine in his own home. It is therefore no surprise that the first photos  of the Edison table in the Cassina catalogues were taken in the dining room of the Milanese architect's  home

Edison is a perfect example of Vico Magistretti’s redesign concept, a method that the architect often  implemented to identify daily or technical elements as a source to create an original design.  Magistretti said that "one of the most elegant systems to connect four steel pipes is the one used in gas  plants, with a simple cross-shaped joint in cast iron.” And so, in the mid-1980s, the table with a name  inspired by the historic Milanese gas company Edison was born.

Cassina  has  carried  out  work  to  reissue  this  piece  with  the  utmost  respect  for  authenticity  in  collaboration with the Vico Magistretti Foundation. Together it was decided to update the measurements  and use more modern materials to make the reissue more contemporary. The choice to present only the  glass top enhances the profile of the base, now available in steel painted matt black or becco d’oca (a  tone of orange dear to Magistretti), highlighting the characteristic cross-shaped joint that connects the  counter-curvatures of the underlying structure.

Edison is available as a square, rectangular or circular table.

The Edison table, together with the iconic Maralunga sofa, the Nuvola Rossa bookcase and a selection of  models and contents from the Cassina Historical Archive, will be on show at the exhibition dedicated to  Vico Magistretti at the Triennale di Milano
